Selected Hadith Regarding Virtues Of Two Sacred City Of Islam [Medina and Mecca]

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 2: Belief, Number 20:

Narrated Anas (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will taste the sweetness of faith:

1. The one to whom ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S) become dearer than anything else.

2. Who loves a person and he loves him Only for ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Sake.

3. Who hates to revert to disbelief (atheism) after ALLAH [S.W.T] has brought (saved) him out from it, as he hates to be thrown in Fire.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2: Belief, Number 25:

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] was asked, “What is the best deed?” He replied, “To believe in ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle (Muhammad) [S.A.W.S]. The questioner then asked, “What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, “To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Cause.” The questioner again asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” He replied, “To perform (Pilgrimage to Mecca) ‘Mubrur, (which is accepted by ALLAH [S.W.T] and is performed with the intention of seeking ALLAH [S.W.T]’s pleasure Only and not to show off and without committing a sin and in accordance with the traditions of the Prophet [S.A.W.S]).”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2: Belief, Number 39:

Narrated Al-Bara’ (bin ‘Azib) (R.A):

When the Prophet [S.A.W.S] came to Medina, he stayed first with his grandfathers or maternal uncles from Ansar. He offered his prayers facing Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) for sixteen or seventeen months, but he wished that he could pray facing the Ka’ba (at Mecca). The first prayer which he offered facing the Ka’ba was the ‘Asr prayer in the company of some people. Then one of those who had offered that prayer with him came out and passed by some people in a Mosque who were bowing during their prayers (facing Jerusalem). He said addressing them, “By ALLAH [S.W.T], I testify that I have prayed with ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] facing Mecca (Ka’ba).’ Hearing that, those people changed their direction towards the Ka’ba immediately. Jews and the people of the scriptures used to be pleased to see the Prophet [S.A.W.S] facing Jerusalem in prayers but when he changed his direction towards the Ka’ba, during the prayers, they disapproved of it. Al-Bara’ (R.A) added, “Before we changed our direction towards the Ka’ba (Mecca) in prayers, some Muslims had died or had been killed and we did not know what to say about them (regarding their prayers.) ALLAH [S.W.T] then revealed: And ALLAH [S.W.T] would never make your faith (prayers) to be lost (i.e. the prayers of those Muslims were valid).'” (2:143).

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 3: Knowledge, Number 112:

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

In the year of the Conquest of Mecca, the tribe of Khuza’a killed a man from the tribe of Bani Laith in revenge for a killed person, belonging to them. They informed the Prophet [S.A.W.S] about it. So he rode his Rahila (she-camel for riding) and addressed the people saying, “ALLAH [S.W.T] held back the killing from Mecca. (The sub-narrator is in doubt whether the Prophet [S.A.W.S] said “elephant or killing,” as the Arabic words standing for these words have great similarity in shape), but HE (ALLAH [S.W.T]) let HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] and the believers over power the infidels of Mecca. Beware! (Mecca is a sanctuary) Verily! Fighting in Mecca was not permitted for anyone before me nor will it be permitted for anyone after me. It (war) in it was made legal for me for few hours or so on that day. No doubt it is at this moment a sanctuary, it is not allowed to uproot its thorny shrubs or to uproot its trees or to pick up its Luqatt (fallen things) except by a person who will look for its owner (announce it publicly). And if somebody is killed, then his closest relative has the right to choose one of the two– the blood money (Diyya) or retaliation having the killer killed. In the meantime a man from Yemen came and said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! Get that written for me.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] ordered his companions (R.A) to write that for him. Then a man from Quraish said, “Except Al-Iqhkhir (a type of grass that has good smell) ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S], as we use it in our houses and graves.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Except Al-Idhkhiri (i.e. Al-Idhkhir is allowed to be plucked).”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 23: Funerals (Al-Janaa’iz), Number 432:

Narrated Ibn Abbas (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “ALLAH [S.W.T] has made Mecca a sanctuary (sacred place) and it was a sanctuary before me and will be so after me. It was made legal for me (to fight in it) for a few hours of the day. None is allowed to uproot its thorny shrubs or to cut its trees or to chase its game or to pick up its fallen things except by a person who announces it publicly.” On that Al-Abbas (R.A) said (to the Prophet [S.A.W.S]), “Except Al-Idhkhir for our goldsmiths and for our graves.” And so the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “Except Al-Idhkhir.” And Abu Huraira (R.A) narrated that the Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Except Al-Idhkhir for our graves and houses.” And Ibn Abbas (R.A) said, “For their goldsmiths and houses.”

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “I have made Medina a sanctuary between its two (Harrat) mountains.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] went to the tribe of Bani Haritha and said (to them), “I see that you have gone out of the sanctuary,” but looking around, he added, “No, you are inside the sanctuary.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 30: Virtues of Medina, Number 94:

Narrated ‘Ali (R.A):

We have nothing except the Book of ALLAH [S.W.T] and this written paper from the Prophet [S.A.W.S] (where-in is written :) Medina is a sanctuary from the ‘Air Mountain to such and such a place, and whoever innovates in it an heresy or commits a sin, or gives shelter to such an innovator in it will incur the curse of ALLAH [S.W.T], the Angels (P.B.U.T), and all the people, none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of Worship will be accepted. And the asylum (of protection) granted by any Muslim is to be secured (respected) by all the other Muslims; and whoever betrays a Muslim in this respect incurs the curse of ALLAH [S.W.T], the Angels (P.B.U.T), and all the people, and none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of Worship will be accepted, and whoever (freed slave) befriends (take as masters) other than his manumitters without their permission incurs the curse of ALLAH [S.W.T], the Angels (P.B.U.T), and all the people, and none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of Worship will be accepted.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 30: Virtues of Medina, Number 95:

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said, “I was ordered to migrate to a town which will swallow (conquer) other towns and is called Yathrib and that is Medina, and it turns out (bad) persons as a furnace removes the impurities of iron.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 30: Virtues of Medina, Number 98:

Sham will also be conquered and some people will migrate (from Medina) and will urge their families and those who will obey them, to migrate (to Sham) although Medina will be better for them; if they but knew. ‘Iraq will be conquered and some people will migrate (from Medina) and will urge their families and those who will obey them to migrate (to ‘Iraq) although Medina will be better for them; if they but knew.”

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said, “Verily, Belief returns and goes back to Medina as a snake returns and goes back to its hole (when in danger).”

Narrated Usama (R.A):

Once the Prophet [S.A.W.S] stood at the top of a (looked out from upon one) castle amongst the castles (or the high buildings) of Medina and said, “Do you see what I see? (No doubt) I see the spots where afflictions will take place among your houses (and these afflictions will be) as numerous as the spots where rain-drops fall.”

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “There will be no town which Ad-dajjal will not enter except Mecca and Medina, and there will be no entrance (road) (of both Mecca and Medina) but the Angels (P.B.U.T) will be standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Medina will shake with its inhabitants thrice (i.e. three earth-quakes will take place) and ALLAH [S.W.T] will expel all the nonbelievers and the hypocrites from it.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 30: Virtues of Medina, Number 106:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] told us a long narrative about Ad-dajjal, and among the many things he mentioned, was his saying, “Ad-dajjal will come and it will be forbidden for him to pass through the entrances of Medina. He will land in some of the salty barren areas (outside) Medina; on that day the best man or one of the best men will come up to him and say, ‘I testify that you are the same dajjal whose description was given to us by ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S].’ Ad-dajjal will say to the people, ‘If I kill this man and bring him back to life again, will you doubt my claim?’ They will say, ‘No.’ Then Ad-dajjal will kill that man and bring him back to life. When Abu Bakr (R.A)’s fever got worse, he would recite (this poetic verse): “Everybody is staying alive with his people, yet death is nearer to him than his shoe laces.” And Bilal (R.A), when his fever deserted him, would recite: “Would that I could stay overnight in a valley wherein I would be surrounded by Idhkhir and Jalil (kinds of good-smelling grass). Would that one day I could drink the water of the Majanna, and would that (The two mountains) Shama and Tafil would appear to me!” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Curse Shaiba bin Rabi’a and ‘Utba bin Rabi’a and Umaiya bin Khalaf as they turned us out of our land to the land of epidemics.” ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] then said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Make us love Medina as we love Mecca or even more than that. O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Give blessings in our Sa’ and our Mudd (measures symbolizing food) and make the climate of Medina suitable for us, and divert its fever towards Aljuhfa.” Aisha (R.A) added: When we reached Medina, it was the most unhealthy of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s lands, and the valley of Bathan (the valley of Medina) used to flow with impure colored water.

2. “No fasting is permissible on the two days of Id-ul-Fitr and ‘Id-ul-Adha”;

Do you know what town is this town?” They (the people) replied, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know better.” He said, “This is the (forbidden) Sacred town (Mecca a sanctuary).” And do you know which month is this month?” They (the People) replied, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know better.” He said, ”This is the Sacred (forbidden) month.” He added, “ALLAH [S.W.T] has made your blood, your properties and your honor Sacred to one another (i.e. Muslims) like the sanctity of this day of yours in this month of yours, in this town of yours.”

So I used to serve ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] whenever he stayed somewhere. I used to hear him saying, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! I seek refuge with YOU (ALLAH [S.W.T]) from (worries) care and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by other men.” I kept on serving him till he returned from (the battle of) Khaibar. He then brought Safiya (R.A), the daughter of Huyay whom he had got (from the booty). I saw him making a kind of cushion with a cloak or a garment for her. He then let her ride behind him. When we reached a place called As-Sahba’, he prepared (a special meal called) Hais, and asked me to invite the men who (came and) ate, and that was the marriage banquet given on the consummation of his marriage to her. Then he proceeded till the mountain of Uhud appeared, whereupon he said, “This mountain loves us and we love it.” When he approached Medina, he said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! I make the land between it’s (i.e. Medina’s) two mountains a sanctuary, as the Prophet Abraham (P.B.U.H) made Mecca a sanctuary. O ALLAH [S.W.T]! And I saw cows (being slaughtered) there, but the reward given by ALLAH [S.W.T] is better (than worldly benefits). Behold, those cows proved to symbolize the believers (who were killed) on the Day (of the battle) of Uhud, and the good (which I saw in the dream) was the good and the reward and the truth which ALLAH [S.W.T] bestowed upon us after the Badr battle. (or the Battle of Uhud) and that was the victory bestowed by ALLAH [S.W.T] in the Battle of Khaibar and the conquest of Mecca).

Then he said, “Isn’t it Dhul-Hijja?” We said, “Yes.” He asked “What town is this?” We said, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know (it) better.’ Then he kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. He then said, “Isn’t it the (forbidden) Town (Mecca)?” We said, “Yes.” He asked, “What is the day today?” We said, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know (it) better. Then he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might call it by another name. Then he said, “Isn’t it the Day of An-Nahr (slaughtering of sacrifices)?” We said, “Yes.” Then he said, “Your blood (lives), your properties,” (the sub narrator Muhammad (R.A), said: I think he also said): “..and your honor) are as sacred to one another like the sanctity of this Day of yours, in this Town of yours, in this Month of yours. You shall meet your LORD and HE will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Don’t go astray after me by striking the necks of one another. Lo! It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform it to those who are absent for perhaps the informed one might comprehend it (understand it) better than some of the present audience.” Whenever the sub-narrator Muhammad (R.A) mentioned that statement, he would say, “The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said the truth.”) And then the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “No doubt! Haven’t I conveyed ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Message to you! No doubt! Haven’t I conveyed ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Message to you?”

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] as saying: dajjal will come from the eastern side with the intention of attacking Medina until he will get down behind Uhud. Then the Angels (P.B.U.T) will turn his face towards Syria and there he will perish.

By HIM in WHOSE Hand is my life, none amongst them would go out (of the city) with a dislike for it, but ALLAH [S.W.T] would make his successor in it someone better than he. Behold! Medina is like furnace which eliminates from it the impurities. And the Last Hour will not come until Medina banishes its evils just as a furnace eliminates the impurities of iron.

He suffered frozen a severe fever in Medina (and) so he came to ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] saying: Muhammad [S.A.W.S] cancel my oath of allegiance, but ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] refused it. He again came and said: Cancel my oath of allegiance, but he (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S]) refused it. He again came to him and said: Cancel my oath of allegiance, but he refused. The desert Arab, however, went away (canceling the allegiance himself); thereupon ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] said: Medina is like a furnace which drives away its impurity and purifies what is good.

We proceeded until Medina wag within our sight and he said: This is Tibba (another name of Medina); this is Uhud, the mountain which loves us and we love it.

He said: My father said: I went to ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] as he was in the house of one of his wives, and said: Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S], which of the two Mosques is founded on piety? Thereupon he took a handful of pebbles and threw them on the ground and then said: This is the very Mosque of yours (Mosque at Medina). He (the narrator) said: I bear witness that I heard your father making mention of it.

Sahih Muslim, Chapter 22, Book 41: Pertaining To Turmoil And Portents Of The Last Hour, Number 7028:

Amir b. Sharahil Sha’bi Sha’b Hamdan (R.A) reported:

That he asked Fatima (R.A), daughter of Qais (R.A) and sister of ad-Dahhak b. Qais (R.A) and she was the first amongst the emigrant women: Narrate to me a hadith which you had heard directly from ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] and there is no extra link in between them. She said: Very well, if you like, I am prepared to do that, and he said to her: Well, do it and narrate that to me. She said: I married the son of Mughira (R.A) and he was a chosen young man of Quraish at that time, but he fell as a Martyr in the first Jihad (fighting) on the side of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S]. When I became a widow, ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Auf (R.A), one amongst the group of the Companions (R.A) of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S], sent me the proposal of marriage. ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] also sent me such a message for his freed slave Usama b. Zaid (R.A). And it had been conveyed to me that ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] had said (about Usama (R.A)): He who loves me should also love Usama (R.A). When ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] talked to me (about this matter), I said: My affairs are in your hand. You may marry me to anyone whom you like. He said: You better shift now to the house of Umm Sharik (R.A), and Umm Sharik (R.A) was a rich lady from amongst the Anqir. She spent generously for the Cause of ALLAH [S.W.T] and entertained guests very hospitably. I said: Well, I will do as you like. He said: Do not do that for Umm Sharik (R.A) is a woman who is very frequently visited by guests and I do not like that your head may be uncovered or the cloth may be removed from your shank and the strangers may catch sight of them which you abhor. You better shift to the house of your cousin ‘Abdullah b. ‘Amr b. Umm Maktum (R.A) and he is a person of the Bani Fihr branch of the Quraish, and he belonged to that tribe (to which Fatima (R.A)) belonged. So I shifted to that house, and when my period of waiting was over, I heard the voice of an announcer making an announcement that the prayer would be observed in the Mosque (where) congregational prayer (is observed). So I set out towards that Mosque and observed prayer along with ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] and I was in the row of the women which was near the row of men. When ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] had finished his prayer, he sat on the pulpit smiling and said: Every worshiper should keep sitting at his place. He then said: Do you know why I had asked you to assemble? They said: ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Messenger [S.A.W.S] know best. He said: By ALLAH [S.W.T]. I have not made you assemble for exhortation or for a warning, but I have detained you here, for Tamim Dari (R.A), a Christian, who came and accepted Islam, told me something, which agrees with what I was telling you about the dajjal. He narrated to me that he had sailed in a ship along with thirty men of Bani Lakhm and Bani Judham and had been tossed by waves in the ocean for a month. Then these (waves) took them (near) the land within the ocean (island) at the time of sunset. They sat in a small side boat and entered that Island. There was a beast with long thick hair (and because of these) they could not distinguish his face from his back. They said: Woe to you, who can you be? Thereupon it said: I am al-Jassasa. They said: What is al-Jassasa? And it said: O people, go to this person in the monastery as he is very much eager to know about you. He (the narrator) said: When it named a person for us we were afraid of it lest it should be a devil. Then we hurriedly went on till we came to that monastery and found a well built person there with his hands tied to his neck and having iron shackles between his two legs up to the ankles. We said: Woe be upon thee, who are you? And he said: You would soon come to know about me but tell me who are you. We said: We are people from Arabia and we embarked upon a boat but the sea waves had been driving us for one month and they brought as near this island. We got into the side boats and entered this island and here a beast met us with profusely thick hair and because of the thickness of his hair his face could not be distinguished from his back. We said: Woe be to thee, who are you? It said: I am al-Jassasa. We said: What is al-Jassasa? And it said: You go to this very person in the monastery for he is eagerly waiting for you to know about you. So we came to you in hot haste fearing that that might be the devil. He (that chained person) said: Tell me about the date-palm trees of Baisan. We said: About what aspect of theirs do you seek information? He said: I ask you whether these trees bear fruit or not. We said: Yes. Thereupon he said: I think these would not bear fruits. He said: Inform me about the lake of Tabariyya? We said: Which aspect of it do you want to know? He said: Is there water in it? They said: There is abundance of water in it. Thereupon he said: I think it would soon become dry. He again said: Inform me about the spring of Zughar. They said: Which aspect of it you want to know? He (the chained person) said: Is there water in it and does it irrigate (the land)? We said to him: Yes, there is abundance of water in it and the inhabitants (of Medina) irrigate (land) with the help of it, He said: Inform me about the unlettered Prophet [S.A.W.S]; what has he done? We said: He has come out from Mecca and has settled in Yathrib (Medina). He said: Do the Arabs fight against him? We said: Yes. He said: How did he deal with him? We informed him that he had overcome those in his neighborhood and they had submitted themselves before him. Thereupon he said to us: Had it actually happened? We said: Yes. Thereupon he said: If it is so that is better for them that they should show obedience to him. I am going to tell you about myself and I am dajjal and would be soon permitted to get out and so I shall get out and travel in the land, and will not spare any town where I would not stay for forty nights except Mecca and Medina as these two (places) are prohibited (areas) for me and I would not make an attempt to enter any one of these two. An Angel (P.B.U.H) with a sword in his hand would confront me and would bar my way and there would be Angels (P.B.U.T) to guard every passage leading to it; then ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] striking the pulpit with the help of the end of his staff said: This implies Taiba meaning Medina. Have I not, told you an account (of the dajjal) like this? ‘The people said: Yes, and this account narrated by Tamim Dari (R.A) was liked by me for it corroborates the account which I gave to you in regard to him (dajjal) at Medina and Mecca. Behold he (dajjal) is in the Syrian Sea (Mediterranean) or the Yemen Sea (Arabian Sea). Nay, on the contrary, he is in the east, he is in the east, he is in the east, and he pointed with his hand towards the east. I (Fatima bint Qais (R.A)) said: I preserved it in my mind (this narration from ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S]).
