Selected Hadith Regarding Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 2: Belief, Number 7:

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said: Islam is based on (the following) five (principles):

1. To testify that none has the right to be Worshiped but ALLAH [S.W.T] and Muhammad [S.A.W.S] is ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle.

2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) Prayers dutifully and perfectly.

3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity).

4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca)

5. To observe Fast during the month of Ramadan.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 2: Belief, Number 20:

Narrated Anas (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will taste the sweetness of faith:

1. The one to whom ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S) become dearer than anything else.

2. Who loves a person and he loves him Only for ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Sake.

3. Who hates to revert to disbelief (atheism) after ALLAH [S.W.T] has brought (saved) him out from it, as he hates to be thrown in Fire.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 2: Belief, Number 43:

Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (R.A):

Once a Jew said to me, “O the chief of believers! There is a verse in your Holy Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed as a day of celebration.” ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (R.A) asked, “Which is that verse?” The Jew replied, “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed MY favor upon you, And have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (5:3) ‘Umar (R.A) replied,”No doubt, we know when and where this verse was revealed to the Prophet [S.A.W.S]. It was Friday and the Prophet [S.A.W.S] was standing at ‘Arafat (i.e. the Day of Hajj)”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 3: Knowledge, Number 136:

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (R.A):

A man asked the Prophet [S.A.W.S]: “What (kinds of clothes) should a Muhrim (a Muslim intending to perform ‘Umra or Hajj) wear? He replied, “He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a head cloak or garment scented with saffron or Wars (kinds of perfumes). And if he has n slippers, then he can use Khuffs (leather socks) but the socks should be cut short so as to make the ankles bare.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 4: Ablutions, Number 167:

Narrated ‘Ubaid Ibn Juraij (R.A):

I asked ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (R.A), “O Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman! I saw you doing four things which I never saw being done by anyone of you companions?” ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (R.A) said, “What are those, O Ibn Juraij?” I said, “I never saw you touching any corner of the Ka’ba except these (two) facing south (Yemen) and I saw you wearing shoes made of tanned leather and dyeing your hair with Hinna; (a kind of dye). I also noticed that whenever you were in Mecca, the people assume lhram on seeing the new moon crescent (1st of Dhul-Hijja) while you did not assume the Ihlal (Ihram)–(Ihram is also called Ihlal which means ‘Loud calling’ because a Muhrim has to recite Talbiya aloud when assuming the state of Ihram)–till the 8th of Dhul-Hijja (Day of Tarwiya). ‘Abdullah (R.A) replied, “Regarding the corners of Ka’ba, I never saw ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] touching except those facing south (Yemen) and regarding the tanned leather shoes, no doubt I saw ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] wearing non-hairy shoes and he used to perform ablution while wearing the shoes (i.e. wash his feet and then put on the shoes). So I love to wear similar shoes. And about the dyeing of hair with Hinna; no doubt I saw ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] dyeing his hair with it and that is why I like to dye (my hair with it). Regarding Ihlal, I did not see ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] assuming Ihlal till he set out for Hajj (on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja).”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 6: Menstrual Periods, Number 302:

Narrated ‘Aisha (R.A):

We set out with the Prophet [S.A.W.S] for Hajj and when we reached Sarif I got my menses. When the Prophet [S.A.W.S] came to me, I was weeping. He asked, “Why are you weeping?” I said, “I wish if I had not performed Hajj this year.” He asked, “May be that you got your menses?” I replied, “Yes.” He then said, “This is the thing which ALLAH [S.W.T] has ordained for all the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do except that you do not perform the Tawaf round the Ka’ba till you are clean.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 15: The Two Festivals (Eids), Number 71:

Narrated Al-Bara’ (R.A):

I heard the Prophet [S.A.W.S] delivering a Khutba saying, “The first thing to be done on this day (first day of ‘Id ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of ALLAH [S.W.T]) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions).”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 15: The Two Festivals (Eids), Number 75:

Narrated Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] delivered the Khutba after offering the prayer on the Day of Nahr and said, “Whoever offers the prayer like us and slaughters like us then his Nusuk (sacrifice) will be accepted by ALLAH [S.W.T]. And whoever slaughters his sacrifice before the ‘Id prayer then he has not done the sacrifice.” Abi Burda bin Niyar (R.A), the uncle of Al-Bara’ (R.A) said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! I have slaughtered my sheep before the ‘Id prayer and I thought today as a day of eating and drinking (not alcoholic drinks), and I liked that my sheep should be the first to be slaughtered in my house. So slaughtered my sheep and took my food before coming for the prayer.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “The sheep which you have slaughtered is just mutton (not a Nusuk).” He (Abu Burda (R.A)) said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! I have a young she-goat which is dearer to me than two sheep. Will that be sufficient as a Nusuk on my behalf? “The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Yes, it will be sufficient for you but it will not be sufficient (as a Nusuk) for anyone else after you.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 15: The Two Festivals (Eids), Number 86:

Narrated Ibn Abbas (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijja).” Then some companions (R.A) of the Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Not even Jihad?” He replied, “Not even Jihad, except that of a man who does it by putting himself and his property in danger (for ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Sake) and does not return with any of those things.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 20: Shortening the Prayers (At-Taqseer), Number 191:

Narrated Ibn Abbas (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] and his companions (R.A) reached Mecca in the morning of the 4th Dhul-Hijja reciting Talbiya (O ALLAH [S.W.T]! We are obedient to your orders, we respond 4 to your call), intending to perform Hajj. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] ordered his companions (R.A) to assume the lhram for Umra instead of Hajj, excepting those who had Hadi (sacrifice) with them.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 23: Funerals (Al-Janaa’iz), Number 356:

Narrated Ibn Abbas (R.A):

While a man was at ‘Arafat (for Hajj) with ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] the fell down from his Mount and broke his neck (and died). So ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said, “Wash him with water and Sidr and shroud him in two pieces of cloth and neither perfume him nor cover his head, for ALLAH [S.W.T] will resurrect him on the Day of Resurrection and he will be saying ‘Labbaik.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 590:

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (R.A):

I saw that ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] used to ride on his Mount at Dhul Hulaifa and used to start saying, “Labbaik” when the Mount stood upright.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 592:

Narrated Thumama bin ‘Abdullah bin Anas (R.A):

Anas (R.A) performed the Hajj on a pack-saddle and he was not a miser. Anas (R.A) said, “ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] performed Hajj on a pack-saddle and the same Mount was carrying his baggage too.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 594:

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] was asked, “Which is the best deed?” He said, “To believe in ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle (P.B.U.T).” He was then asked, “Which is the next (in goodness)?” He said, “To participate in Jihad in ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Cause.” He was then asked, “Which is the next?” He said, “To perform Hajj-Mabrur.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 596:

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Whoever performs Hajj for ALLAH [S.W.T]’s pleasure and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 601:

Narrated Ibn Abbas (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] had fixed Dhul Hulaifa as the Mlqat for the people of Medina; Al-Juhfa for the people of Sham; and Qarn Ul-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. So, these (above mentioned) are the Mawaqit for all those living at those places, and besides them for those who come through those places with the intention of performing Hajj and ‘Umra and whoever lives within these places should assume Ihram from his dwelling place, and similarly the people of Mecca can assume lhram from Mecca.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 623:

Narrated Anas bin Malik (R.A):

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] offered four Rakat of Zuhr prayer at Medina and we were in his company, and two Rakat of the Asr prayer at Dhul-Hulaifa and then passed the night there till it was dawn; then he rode, and when he reached Al-Baida’, he Praised and Glorified ALLAH [S.W.T] and said Takbir (i.e. Alhamdu-lillah and Subhan ALLAH and ALLAHU-Akbar). Then he and the people along with him recited Talbiya with the intention of performing Hajj and Umra. When we reached (Mecca) he ordered us to finish the lhram (after performing the Umra) (only those who had no Hadi (animal for sacrifice) with them were asked to do so) till the day of Tarwiya that is 8th Dhul-Hijja when they assumed Ihram for Hajj. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] sacrificed many camels (slaughtering them) with his own hands while standing. While ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] was in Medina he sacrificed two horned rams black and white in color in the Name of ALLAH [S.W.T].”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 630:

Narrated Abu Musa (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] sent me to some people in Yemen and when I returned, I found him at Al-Batha. He asked me, “With what intention have you assumed Ihram (i.e. for Hajj or for Umra or for both?”) I replied, “I have assumed Ihram with an intention like that of the Prophet [S.A.W.S].” He asked, “Have you a Hadi with you?” I replied in the negative. He ordered me to perform Tawaf round the Ka’ba and between Safa and Marwa and then to finish my Ihram. I did so and went to a woman from my tribe who combed my hair or washed my head. Then, when Umar (R.A) came (i.e. became Caliph) he said, “If we follow ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Book, it orders us to complete Hajj and Umra; as ALLAH [S.W.T] says: “Perform the Hajj and Umra for ALLAH [S.W.T].” (2.196). And if we follow the tradition of the Prophet [S.A.W.S] who did not finish his Ihram till he sacrificed his Hadi.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 632:

Narrated Al-Aswad (R.A):

‘Aisha (R.A) said, We went out with the Prophet [S.A.W.S] (from Medina) with the intention of performing Hajj only and when we reached Mecca we performed Tawaf round the Ka’ba and then the Prophet [S.A.W.S] ordered those who had not driven the Hadi along with them to finish their Ihram. So the people who had not driven the Hadi along with them finished their Ihram. The Prophet [S.A.W.S]’s wives, too, had not driven the Hadi with them, so they too, finished their Ihram.” ‘Aisha (R.A) added, “I got my menses and could not perform Tawaf round the Ka’ba.” So when it was the night of Hasba (i.e. when we stopped at Al-Muhassab), I said, ‘O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! Everyone is returning after performing Hajj and ‘Umra but I am returning after performing Hajj only.’ He said, ‘Didn’t you perform Tawaf round the Ka’ba the night we reached Mecca?’ I replied in the negative. He said, ‘Go with your brother to Tan’im and assume the Ihram for ‘Umra, (and after performing it) come back to such and such a place.’ On that Safiya (R.A) said, ‘I feel that I will detain you all.’ the Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, ‘O ‘Aqra Halqa! Didn’t you perform Tawaf of the Ka’ba on the day of sacrifice? (i.e. Tawaf-al-ifada) Safiya (R.A) replied in the affirmative. He said, (to Safiya (R.A)). ‘There is no harm for you to proceed on with us.'” ‘Aisha (R.A) added, “(after returning from ‘Umra), the Prophet [S.A.W.S] met me while he was ascending (from Mecca) and I was descending to it, or I was ascending and he was descending.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 638:

Narrated Shu’ba (R.A):

Abu Jamra Nasr bin ‘Imran Ad-Duba’i (R.A) said, “I intended to perform Hajj-at-Tamattu’ and the people advised me not to do so. I asked Ibn Abbas (R.A) regarding it and he ordered me to perform Hajj-at-Tammatu’. Later I saw in a dream someone saying to me, ‘Hajj-Mabrur (Hajj performed in accordance with the Prophet [S.A.W.S]’s tradition without committing sins and accepted by ALLAH [S.W.T]) and an accepted ‘Umra.’ So I told that dream to Ibn Abbas (R.A). He said, ‘This is the tradition of Abu-l-Qasim [S.A.W.S].’ Then he said to me, ‘Stay with me and I shall give you a portion of my property.'” I (Shu’ba (R.A)) asked, “Why (did he invite you)?” He (Abu Jamra (R.A)) said, “Because of the dream which I had seen.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 639:

Narrated Abu Shihab (R.A):

I left for Mecca for Hajj-at-Tamattu’ assuming Ihram for ‘Umra. I reached Mecca three days before the day of Tarwiya (8th Dhul-Hijja). Some people of Mecca said to me, “Your Hajj will be like the Hajj performed by the people of Mecca (i.e. you will lose the superiority of assuming Ihram from the Miqat). So I went to ‘Ata (R.A)’ asking him his view about it. He said, “Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (R.A) narrated to me, ‘I performed Hajj with ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] on the day when he drove camels with him. The people had assumed Ihram for Hajj-al-Ifrad. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] ordered them to finish their Ihram after Tawaf round the Ka’ba, and between Safa and Marwa and to cut short their hair and then to stay there (in Mecca) as non-Muhrims till the day of Tarwiya (i.e. 8th of Dhul-Hijja) when they would assume Ihram for Hajj and they were ordered to make the Ihram with which they had come as for ‘Umra only. They asked, ‘How can we make it ‘Umra (Tamattu’) as we have intended to perform Hajj?’ The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, ‘Do what I have ordered you. Had I not brought the Hadi with me, I would have done the same, but I cannot finish my Ihram till the Hadi reaches its destination (i.e. is slaughtered).’ So, they did (what he ordered them to do).”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 675:

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam (R.A) from his father who said:

“Umar bin Al-Khattab (R.A) addressed the Corner (Black Stone) saying, ‘By ALLAH [S.W.T]! I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet [S.A.W.S] touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you.’ Then he kissed it and said, ‘There is no reason for us to do Ramal (in Tawaf) except that we wanted to show off before the pagans, and now ALLAH [S.W.T] has destroyed them.’ ‘Umar (R.A) added, ‘(Nevertheless), the Prophet [S.A.W.S] did that and we do not want to leave it (i.e. Ramal).’

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 683:

Narrated ‘Urwa (R.A):

‘Aisha (R.A) said, “The first thing the Prophet [S.A.W.S] did on reaching Mecca, was the Ablution and then he performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba and that was not ‘Umra (alone), (but Hajj-al-Qiran). ‘Urwa (R.A) added: Later Abu Bakr and ‘Umar (R.A) did the same in their Hajj.” And I performed the Hajj with my father Az-Zubair (R.A), and the first thing he did was Tawaf of the Ka’ba. Later I saw the Muhajirin (Emigrants) and the Ansar doing the same. My mother (Asma’ (R.A)) told me that she, her sister (‘Aisha (R.A)), Az-Zubair (R.A) and such and such persons assumed Ihram for ‘Umra, and after they passed their hands over the Black Stone Corner (of the Ka’ba) they finished the Ihram. (i.e. After doing Tawaf of the Ka’ba and Sa’i between Safa-Marwa.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 684:

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (R.A):

When ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba for Hajj or ‘Umra, he used to do Ramal during the first three rounds, and in the last four rounds he used to walk; then after the Tawaf he used to offer two Rakat and then performed Tawaf between Safa and Marwa.

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 705:

Narrated Muhammad bin ‘Abdur Rahman bin Nawfal Al-Qurashi (R.A):

I asked ‘Urwa bin Az-Zubair (R.A) (regarding the Hajj of the Prophet [S.A.W.S]). ‘Urwa (R.A) replied, “Aisha (R.A) narrated, ‘When the Prophet [S.A.W.S] reached Mecca, the first thing he started with was the Ablution, then he performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba and his intention was not ‘Umra alone (but Hajj and ‘Umra together).’ “Later Abu Bakr (R.A), I performed the Hajj and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Ka’ba and it was not ‘Umra alone (but Hajj and ‘Umra together). And then ‘Umar (R.A) did the same. Then ‘Uthman (R.A) performed the Hajj and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Ka’ba and it was not ‘Umra alone. And then Muawiya and ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (R.A) did the same. I performed Hajj with Ibn Az-Zubair (R.A) and the first thing he started with was Tawaf of the Ka’ba and it was not ‘Umra alone, (but Hajj and ‘Umra together). Then I saw the Muhajirin (Emigrants) and Ansar doing the same and it was not ‘Umra alone. And the last person I saw doing the same was Ibn ‘Umar (R.A), and he did not do another ‘Umra after finishing the first. Now here is Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) present amongst the people! They neither ask him nor anyone of the previous ones. And all these people, on entering Mecca, would not start with anything unless they had performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba, and would not finish their Ihram. And no doubt, I saw my mother and my aunt, on entering Mecca doing nothing before performing Tawaf of the Ka’ba, and they would not finish their lhram. And my mother informed me that she, her sister, Az-Zubair (R.A) and such and such persons had assumed lhram for ‘Umra and after passing their hands over the Corner (the Black Stone) (i.e. finishing their Umra) they finished their Ihram.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 706:

Narrated ‘Urwa (R.A):

I asked ‘Aisha (R.A): “How do you interpret the statement of ALLAH [S.W.T]: Verily! (the mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwa are among the symbols of ALLAH [S.W.T], and whoever performs the Hajj to the Ka’ba or performs ‘Umra, it is not harmful for him to perform Tawaf between them (Safa and Marwa.) (2.158). By ALLAH [S.W.T]! (it is evident from this revelation) there is no harm if one does not perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa.” ‘Aisha (R.A) said, “O, my nephew! Your interpretation is not true. Had this interpretation of yours been correct, the statement of ALLAH [S.W.T] should have been, ‘It is not harmful for him if he does not perform Tawaf between them.’ But in fact, this Divine Inspiration was revealed concerning the Ansar who used to assume lhram for worshiping an idol called “Manat” which they used to worship at a place called Al-Mushallal before they embraced Islam, and whoever assumed Ihram (for the idol), would consider it not right to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When they embraced Islam, they asked ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] regarding it, saying, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! We used to refrain from Tawaf between Safa and Marwa.” So ALLAH [S.W.T] revealed: ‘Verily; (the mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwa are among the symbols of ALLAH [S.W.T].’ “Aisha (R.A) added, “Surely, ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] set the tradition of Tawaf between Safa and Marwa, so nobody is allowed to omit the Tawaf between them.” Later on I (‘Urwa (R.A)) told Abu Bakr bin ‘Abdur-Rahman (R.A) (of ‘Aisha (R.A)’s narration) and he said, ‘I have not heard of such information, but I heard learned men saying that all the people, except those whom ‘Aisha (R.A) mentioned and who used to assume lhram for the sake of Manat, used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When ALLAH [S.W.T] referred to the Tawaf of the Ka’ba and did not mention Safa and Marwa in the Qur’an, the people asked, ‘O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! We used to perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa and ALLAH [S.W.T] has revealed (the verses concerning) Tawaf of the Ka’ba and has not mentioned Safa and Marwa. Is there any harm if we perform Tawaf between Safa and Marwa?’ So ALLAH [S.W.T] revealed: “Verily As-Safa and Al-Marwa are among the symbols of ALLAH [S.W.T].” Abu Bakr (R.A) said, “It seems that this verse was revealed concerning the two groups, those who used to refrain from Tawaf between Safa and Marwa in the Pre-lslamic Period of ignorance and those who used to perform the Tawaf then, and after embracing Islam they refrained from the Tawaf between them as ALLAH [S.W.T] had enjoined Tawaf of the Ka’ba and did not mention Tawaf (of Safa and Marwa) till later after mentioning the Tawaf of the Ka’ba.’

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 707:

Narrated Nafi’ (R.A):

Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) said, “When ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] performed the first Tawaf he did Ramal in the first three rounds and then walked in the remaining four rounds (of Tawaf of the Ka’ba), where as in performing Tawaf between Safa and Marwa he used to run in the midst of the rain-water passage,” I asked Nafi’ (R.A), “Did ‘Abdullah (bin ‘Umar) (R.A) use to walk steadily on reaching the Yemenite Corner?” He replied, “No, unless people were crowded at the Corner; otherwise he would not leave it without touching it.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 709:

Narrated ‘Amr bin Dinar (R.A):

I heard Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) saying, “the Prophet [S.A.W.S] arrived at Mecca and performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba and then offered a two-Rakat prayer and then performed Tawaf between Safa and Marwa.” Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) then recited (the verse): “Verily! In ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] you have a good example.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 2, Book 26: Pilgrimage (Hajj), Number 713:

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] and his companions (R.A) assumed Ihram for Hajj and none except the Prophet [S.A.W.S] and Talha (R.A) had the Hadi (sacrifice) with them. ‘Ali (R.A) arrived from Yemen and had a Hadi with him. ‘Ali (R.A) said, “I have assumed Ihram for what the Prophet [S.A.W.S] has done.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] ordered his companions (R.A) to perform the ‘Umra with the lhram which they had assumed, and after finishing Tawaf (of Ka’ba, Safa and Marwa) to cut short their hair, and to finish their lhram except those who had Hadi with them. They (the people) said, “How can we proceed to Mina (for Hajj) after having sexual relations with our wives?” When that news reached the Prophet [S.A.W.S] he said, “If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the Hadi with me. Had there been no Hadi with me, I would have finished the state of lhram.” ‘Aisha (R.A) got her menses, so she performed all the ceremonies of Hajj except Tawaf of the Ka’ba, and when she got clean (from her menses), she performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba. She said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! (All of you) are returning with the Hajj and ‘Umra, but I am returning after performing Hajj only.” So the Prophet [S.A.W.S] ordered ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr (R.A) to accompany her to Tan’im and thus she performed the ‘Umra after the Hajj.

So some of them would reach Mina at the time of the Fajr prayer and some of them would come later. When they reached Mina they would throw pebbles on the Jamra (Jamrat-al-Aqaba) Ibn ‘Umar (R.A) used to say, “ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] gave the permission to them (weak people) to do so.”

During the last Hajj (Hajj-al-Wada’) of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] he performed ‘Umra and Hajj. He drove a Hadi along with him from Dhul-Hulaifa. ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] started by assuming Ihram for ‘Umra and Hajj. And the people, too, performed the ‘Umra and Hajj along with the Prophet [S.A.W.S]. Some of them brought the Hadi and drove it along with them, while the others did not. So, when the Prophet [S.A.W.S] arrived at Mecca. He said to the people, “Whoever among you has driven the Hadi, should not finish his Ihram till he completes his Hajj. And whoever among you has not (driven) the Hadi with him, should perform Tawaf of the Ka’ba and the Tawaf between Safa and Marwa, then cut short his hair and finish his Ihram, and should later assume Ihram for Hajj; but he must offer a Hadi (sacrifice); and if anyone cannot afford a Hadi, he should fast for three days during the Hajj and seven days when he returns home. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba on his arrival (at Mecca); he touched the (Black Stone) corner first of all and then did Ramal (fast walking with moving of the shoulders) during the first three rounds round the Ka’ba, and during the last four rounds he walked. After finishing Tawaf of the Ka’ba, he offered a two Rakat prayer at Maqam Ibrahim (P.B.U.H), and after finishing the prayer he went to Safa and Marwa and performed seven rounds of Tawaf between them and did not do any deed forbidden because of Ihram, till he finished all the ceremonies of his Hajj and sacrificed his Hadi on the day of Nahr (10th day of Dhul-Hijja). He then hastened onwards (to Mecca) and performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba and then everything that was forbidden because of Ihram became permissible. Those who took and drove the Hadi with them did the same as ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] did.

What is wrong with the people; they finished their Ihram after performing ‘Umra, but you have not finished it after your ‘Umra?” He replied, “I matted my hair and have garlanded my Hadi. So, I cannot finish my Ihram till I slaughter (my Hadi). “

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Forgive those who get their heads shaved.” The people asked. “Also those who get their hair cut short?” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Forgive those who have their heads shaved.” The people said, “Also those who get their hair cut short?” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] (invoke ALLAH [S.W.T] for those who have their heads shaved and) at the third time said, “also (forgive) those who get their hair cut short.”

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] stopped (for a while near the Jimar at Mina) during his last Hajj and the people started asking him questions. A man said, “Ignorantly I got my head shaved before slaughtering.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] replied, “Slaughter (now) and there is no harm in it.” Another man said, “Unknowingly I slaughtered the Hadi before doing the Rami.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Do Rami now and there is no harm in it.” So, on that day, when the Prophet [S.A.W.S] was asked about anything (about the ceremonies of Hajj) done before or after (its stated time) his reply was, “Do it (now) and there is no harm.”

(Tell me) what is the day today?’ The people replied, ‘It is the Forbidden (Sacred) day.’ He asked again, ‘What town is this?’ They replied, ‘It is the Forbidden (Sacred) Town.’ He asked, ‘Which month is this?’ They replied, ‘It is the Forbidden (Sacred) Month.’ He said, ‘No doubt! Your blood, your properties, and your honor are Sacred to one another like the Sanctity of this Day of yours, in this (Sacred) Town (Mecca) of yours, in this Month of yours.’ The Prophet [S.A.W.S] repeated his statement again and again. After that he raised his head and said, ‘O ALLAH! Haven’t I conveyed (YOUR Message) to them’. Haven’t I conveyed YOUR Message to them?'” Ibn Abbas (R.A) added, “By HIM in WHOSE Hand my soul is, the following was his will (Prophet [S.A.W.S]’s will) to his followers:–It is incumbent upon those who are present to convey this information to those who are absent.  The Prophet [S.A.W.S] delivered to us a sermon on the Day of Nahr. He said, “Do you know what is the day today?” We said, “ALLAH and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know better.” He remained silent till we thought that he might give that day another name. He said, “Isn’t it the Day of Nahr?” We said, “It is.” He further asked, “Which month is this?” We said, “ALLAH and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know better.” He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, “Isn’t it the Month of Dhul-Hijja?” We replied: “Yes! It is.” He further asked, “What town is this?” We replied, “ALLAH and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know it better.” He remained silent till we thought that he might give it another name. He then said, “Isn’t it the Forbidden (Sacred) Town (of Mecca)?” We said, “Yes. It is.” He said, “No doubt, your blood and your properties are Sacred to one another like the Sanctity of this Day of yours, in this Month of yours, in this Town of yours, till the Day you meet your LORD. No doubt! Haven’t I Conveyed ALLAH’s Message to you? They said, “Yes.” He said, “O ALLAH! Be Witness. So it is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience, who will convey it to him. Beware! Do not renegade (as) disbelievers after me by striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another.”

Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Wusta (middle Jamra) and then he would go to the left towards the middle ground, where he would stand facing the Qibla. He would remain standing there for a long period to invoke (ALLAH [S.W.T]) while raising his hands, and would stand there for a long period. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] reached Mecca and performed Tawaf of the Ka’ba and between Safa and Marwa and did not finish the Ihram, because he had the Hadi with him. His companions and his wives (R.A) performed Tawaf (of the Ka’ba and between Safa and Marwa), and those who had no Hadi with them finished their Ihram. I got the menses and performed all the ceremonies of Hajj. So, when the Night of Hasba (night of departure) came, I said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! All your companions (R.A) are returning with Hajj and ‘Umra except me.” He asked me, “Didn’t you perform Tawaf of the Ka’ba (Umra) when you reached Mecca?” I said, “No.” He said, “Go to Tan’im with your brother ‘Abdur-Rahman (R.A), and assume Ihram for ‘Umra and I will wait for you at such and such a place.” So I went with ‘Abdur-Rahman (R.A) to Tan’im and assumed Ihram for ‘Umra. Then Safiya bint Huyay (R.A) got menses. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, ” ‘Aqra Halqa! You will detain us! Didn’t you perform Tawaf-al-Ifada on the Day of Nahr (slaughtering)?” She said, “Yes, I did.” He said, “Then there is no harm, depart.” So I met the Prophet [S.A.W.S] when he was ascending the heights towards Mecca and I was descending, or vice-versa.

Then he said, “What did he (the Prophet [S.A.W.S]) say about Khadija (R.A)?” He (Abdullah bin Aufa (R.A)) said, “(He said) ‘Give Khadija (R.A) the good tidings that she will have a palace made of Qasab in Paradise and there will be neither noise nor any trouble in it.”

The first lady to use a girdle was the mother of Ishmael (P.B.U.H) (P.B.U.T). She used a girdle so that she might hide her tracks from Sarah (P.B.U.H). Abraham (P.B.U.H) brought her and her son Ishmael (P.B.U.H) while she was suckling him, to a place near the Ka’ba under a tree on the spot of Zam-zam, at the highest place in the Mosque. During those days there was nobody in Mecca, nor was there any water So he made them sit over there and placed near them a leather bag containing some dates, and a small water-skin containing some water, and set out homeward. Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s mother followed him saying, “O Abraham (P.B.U.H)! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything (to enjoy)?” She repeated that to him many times, but he did not look back at her then she asked him, “Has ALLAH [S.W.T] ordered you to do so?” He said, “Yes.” She said, “Then HE will not neglect us,” and returned while Abraham (P.B.U.H) proceeded onwards, and on reaching the Thaniya where they could not see him, he faced the Ka’ba, and raising both hands, invoked ALLAH [S.W.T] saying the following prayers: ‘O our LORD! I have made some of my offspring dwell in a valley without cultivation, by YOUR Sacred House (Ka’ba at Mecca) in order, O our LORD, that they may offer prayer perfectly. So fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O ALLAH [S.W.T]) provide them with fruits, so that they may give thanks.’ (14.37) Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s mother went on suckling Ishmael (P.B.U.H) and drinking from the water (she had). When the water in the water-skin had all been used up, she became thirsty and her child also became thirsty. She started looking at him (i.e. Ishmael (P.B.U.H)) tossing in agony; She left him, for she could not endure looking at him, and found that the mountain of Safa was the nearest mountain to her on that land. She stood on it and started looking at the valley keenly so that she might see somebody, but she could not see anybody. Then she descended from Safa and when she reached the valley, she tucked up her robe and ran in the valley like a person in distress and trouble, till she crossed the valley and reached the Marwa mountain where she stood and started looking, expecting to see somebody, but she could not see anybody. She repeated that (running between Safa and Marwa) seven times.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “This is the source of the tradition of the walking of people between them (i.e. Safa and Marwa). When she reached the Marwa (for the last time) she heard a voice and she asked herself to be quiet and listened attentively. She heard the voice again and said, ‘O, (whoever you may be)! You have made me hear your voice; have you got something to help me?” And behold! She saw an Angel (P.B.U.H) at the place of Zam-zam, digging the earth with his heel (or his wing), till water flowed from that place. She started to make something like a basin around it, using her hand in this way, and started filling her water-skin with water with her hands, and the water was flowing out after she had scooped some of it.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “May ALLAH [S.W.T] bestow Mercy on Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s mother! Had she let the Zam-zam (flow without trying to control it) (or had she not scooped from that water) (to fill her water-skin), Zam-zam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] further added, “Then she drank (water) and suckled her child. The Angel (P.B.U.H) said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid of being neglected, for this is the House of ALLAH [S.W.T] which will be built by this boy and his father, and ALLAH [S.W.T] never neglects HIS people.’ The House (i.e. Ka’ba) at that time was on a high place resembling a hillock, and when torrents came, they flowed to its right and left. She lived in that way till some people from the tribe of Jurhum or a family from Jurhum passed by her and her child, as they (i.e. the Jurhum people) were coming through the way of Ka’ba’. They landed in the lower part of Mecca where they saw a bird that had the habit of flying around water and not leaving it. They said, ‘This bird must be flying around water, though we know that there is no water in this valley.’ They sent one or two messengers who discovered the source of water, and returned to inform them of the water. So, they all came (towards the water).” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s mother was sitting near the water. They asked her, ‘Do you allow us to stay with you?” She replied, ‘Yes, but you will have no right to possess the water.’ They agreed to that.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] further said, “Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s mother was pleased with the whole situation as she used to love to enjoy the company of the people. So, they settled there, and later on they sent for their families who came and settled with them so that some families became permanent residents there. The child (i.e. Ishmael (P.B.U.H)) grew up and learnt Arabic from them and (his virtues) caused them to love and admire him as he grew up, and when he reached the age of puberty they made him marry a woman from amongst them. After Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s mother had died, Abraham (P.B.U.H) came after Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s marriage in order to see his family that he had left before, but he did not find Ishmael (P.B.U.H) there. When he asked Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s wife about him, she replied, ‘He has gone in search of our livelihood.’ Then he asked her about their way of living and their condition, and she replied, ‘We are living in misery; we are living in hardship and destitution,’ complaining to him. He said, ‘When your husband returns, convey my salutation to him and tell him to change the threshold of the gate (of his house).’ When Ishmael (P.B.U.H) came, he seemed to have felt something unusual, so he asked his wife, ‘Has anyone visited you?’ She replied, ‘Yes, an old man of so-and-so description came and asked me about you and I informed him, and he asked about our state of living, and I told him that we were living in a hardship and poverty.’ On that Ishmael (P.B.U.H) said, ‘Did he advise you anything?’ She replied, ‘Yes, he told me to convey his salutation to you and to tell you to change the threshold of your gate.’ Ishmael (P.B.U.H) said, ‘It was my father, and he has ordered me to divorce you. Go back to your family.’ So, Ishmael (P.B.U.H) divorced her and married another woman from amongst them (i.e. Jurhum). Then Abraham (P.B.U.H) stayed away from them for a period as long as ALLAH [S.W.T] wished and called on them again but did not find Ishmael (P.B.U.H). So he came to Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s wife and asked her about Ishmael (P.B.U.H). She said, ‘He has gone in search of our livelihood.’ Abraham (P.B.U.H) asked her, ‘How are you getting on?’ asking her about their sustenance and living. She replied, ‘We are prosperous and well-off (i.e. we have everything in abundance).’ Then she thanked ALLAH [S.W.T]’ Abraham (P.B.U.H) said, ‘What kind of food do you eat?’ She said. ‘Meat.’ He said, ‘What do you drink?’ She said, ‘Water.” He said, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Bless their meat and water.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “At that time they did not have grain, and if they had grain, he would have also invoked ALLAH [S.W.T] to bless it.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “If somebody has only these two things as his sustenance, his health and disposition will be badly affected, unless he lives in Mecca.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added,” Then Abraham (P.B.U.H) said Ishmael (P.B.U.H)’s wife, “When your husband comes, give my regards to him and tell him that he should keep firm the threshold of his gate.’ When Ishmael (P.B.U.H) came back, he asked his wife, ‘Did anyone call on you?’ She replied, ‘Yes, a good-looking old man came to me,’ so she praised him and added. ‘He asked about you, and I informed him, and he asked about our livelihood and I told him that we were in a good condition.’ Ishmael (P.B.U.H) asked her, ‘Did he give you any piece of advice?’ She said, ‘Yes, he told me to give his regards to you and ordered that you should keep firm the threshold of your gate.’ On that Ishmael (P.B.U.H) said, ‘It was my father, and you are the threshold (of the gate). He has ordered me to keep you with me.’ Then Abraham (P.B.U.H) stayed away from them for a period as long as ALLAH [S.W.T] wished, and called on them afterwards. He saw Ishmael (P.B.U.H) under a tree near Zam-zam, sharpening his arrows. When he saw Abraham (P.B.U.H), he rose up to welcome him (and they greeted each other as a father does with his son or a son does with his father). Abraham (P.B.U.H) said, ‘O Ishmael (P.B.U.H)! ALLAH [S.W.T] has given me an order.’ Ishmael (P.B.U.H) said, ‘Do what your LORD has ordered you to do.’ Abraham (P.B.U.H) asked, ‘Will you help me?’ Ishmael (P.B.U.H) said, ‘I will help you.’ Abraham (P.B.U.H) said, ALLAH [S.W.T] has ordered me to build a house here,’ pointing to a hillock higher than the land surrounding it.” the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “Then they raised the foundations of the House (i.e. the Ka’ba). Ishmael (P.B.U.H) brought the stones and Abraham (P.B.U.H) was building, and when the walls became high, Ishmael (P.B.U.H) brought this stone and put it for Abraham (P.B.U.H) who stood over it and carried on building, while Ishmael (P.B.U.H) was handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, ‘O our LORD! Accept (this service) from us, Verily, YOU are the ALL-HEARING, the ALL-KNOWING.’ the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “Then both of them went on building and going round the Ka’ba saying: O our LORD! Accept (this service) from us, Verily, YOU are the ALL-HEARING, the ALL-KNOWING.” (2.127)

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 5, Book 59: Military Expeditions led by the Prophet [S.A.W.S], Number 685:

Narrated Ibn Umar (R.A):

We were talking about Hajjat-ul-Wada, while the Prophet [S.A.W.S] was amongst us. We did not know what Hajjat-ul-Wada’ signified. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] Praised ALLAH [S.W.T] and then mentioned Al-masih Ad-dajjal and described him extensively, saying, “ALLAH [S.W.T] did not send any Prophet (P.B.U.T) but that Prophet (P.B.U.T) warned his nation of Al-masih Ad-dajjal. Noah (P.B.U.H) and the Prophets (P.B.U.T) following him warned (their people) of him. He will appear amongst you (O Muhammad [S.A.W.S]’s followers), and if it happens that some of his qualities may be hidden from you, but your LORD’s State is clear to you and not hidden from you. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said it thrice. Verily, your LORD is not blind in one eye, while he (i.e. Ad-dajjal) is blind in the right eye, which looks like a grape bulging out (of its cluster). No doubt! ALLAH [S.W.T] has made your blood and your properties sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this town of yours, in this month of yours.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] added: No doubt! Haven’t I conveyed ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Message to you?” They replied, “Yes,” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said thrice, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]! Be witness for it.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “Woe to you!” (or said), “May ALLAH [S.W.T] be merciful to you! Do not become infidels after me (i.e. my death) by cutting the necks (throats) of one another.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 8, Book 78: Oaths and Vows, Number 658:

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-As (R.A):

While the Prophet [S.A.W.S] was delivering a sermon on the Day of Nahr (i.e. 10th Dhul-Hijja Day of slaughtering the sacrifice), a man got up saying, “I thought, O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S], such-and-such a thing was to be done before such-and-such a thing.” Another man got up, saying, “O ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S]! As regards these three (acts of Hajj), thought so-and-so.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Do, and there is no harm,” concerning all those matters on that day. And so, on that day, whatever question he was asked, he said, “Do it, do it, and there is no harm therein.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 83: Blood Money, Number 21:

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “The most hated persons to ALLAH [S.W.T] are three:

(1) A person who deviates from the right conduct, i.e. an evil doer, in the Haram (sanctuaries of Mecca and Medina);

(2) A person who seeks that the traditions of the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance, should remain in Islam

(3) And a person who seeks to shed somebody’s blood without any right.”

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 9, Book 93: Oneness, Uniqueness of ALLAH [S.W.T] (Tawheed), Number 539:

Narrated Abu Bakr (R.A):

The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, “Time has come back to its original state which it had when ALLAH [S.W.T] Created the Heavens and the Earth, the year is twelve months, of which four are sacred; (and out of these four) three are in succession, namely, Dhul-Qa’da, Dhul-Hijja and Muharram, and (the fourth one) Rajab Mudar which is between Jumad (Ath-Tham) and Sha’ban.” The Prophet [S.A.W.S] then asked us, “Which month is this?” We said, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know (it) better.” He kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. Then he said, “Isn’t it Dhul-Hijja?” We said, “Yes.” He asked “What town is this?” We said, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know (it) better.’ Then he kept quiet so long that we thought he might call it by another name. He then said, “Isn’t it the (forbidden) Town (Mecca)?” We said, “Yes.” He asked, “What is the day today?” We said, “ALLAH [S.W.T] and HIS Apostle [S.A.W.S] know (it) better. Then he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might call it by another name. Then he said, “Isn’t it the Day of An-Nahr (slaughtering of sacrifices)?” We said, “Yes.” Then he said, “Your blood (lives), your properties,” (the sub narrator Muhammad (R.A), said: I think he also said): “..and your honor) are as sacred to one another like the sanctity of this Day of yours, in this Town of yours, in this Month of yours. You shall meet your LORD and HE will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Don’t go astray after me by striking the necks of one another. Lo! It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform it to those who are absent for perhaps the informed one might comprehend it (understand it) better than some of the present audience.” Whenever the sub-narrator Muhammad (R.A) mentioned that statement, he would say, “The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said the truth.”) And then the Prophet [S.A.W.S] added, “No doubt! Haven’t I conveyed ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Message to you! No doubt! Haven’t I conveyed ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Message to you?”

Sahih Muslim: Chapter 30, Book 1: Faith (Kitab Al Iman), Number 0124:

It is narrated on the authority of Jarir b. ‘Abdullah (R.A):

That the Apostle of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] asked him on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage to make the people silent and then said: Do not return to unbelief after me by striking the necks of one another.

Sahih Muslim: Chapter 70, Book 5: Zakat (Kitab Al-Zakat), Number 3126:

 ‘Aisha (R.A) reported:

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] as saying: There is no day when ALLAH [S.W.T] sets free more servants from Hell than the Day of ‘Arafa. HE draws near, then praises them to the Angels (P.B.U.T), saying: What do these want?

Sahih Muslim: Chapter 17, Book 7: Pilgrimage (Kitab Al-Hajj), Number 2803:

Ja’far b. Muhammad (R.A) reported on the authority of his father:

We went to Jabir b. Abdullah (R.A) and he began inquiring about the people (who had gone to see him) till it was my turn. I said: I am Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Husain (R.A). He placed his hand upon my head and opened my upper button and then the lower one and then placed his palm on my chest (in order to bless me), and I was, during those days, a young boy, and he said: You are welcome, my nephew. Ask whatever you want to ask. And I asked him but as he was blind (he could not respond to me immediately), and the time for prayer came. He stood up covering himself in his mantle. And whenever he placed its ends upon his shoulders they slipped down on account of being short (in size). Another mantle was, however, lying on the clothes rack near by. And he led us in the prayer. I said to him: Tell me about the Hajj of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S]. And he pointed with his hand nine, and then stated: The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] stayed in (Medina) for nine years but did not perform Hajj, then he made a public announcement in the tenth year to the effect that ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] was about to perform the Hajj. A large number of persons came to Medina and all of them were anxious to follow the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] and do according to his doing. We set out with him till we reached Dhu’l Hulaifa. Asma’ (R.A) daughter of Umais gave birth to Muhammad b. Abu Bakr (R.A). She sent message to the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] asking him: What should I do? He (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S]) said: Take a bath, bandage your private parts and put on Ihram. The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] then prayed in the Mosque and then mounted al-Qaswa (his she-camel) and it stood erect with him on its back at al-Baida’. And I saw as far as I could see in front of me but riders and pedestrians, and also on my right and on my left and behind me like this. And the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] was prominent among us and the (revelation) of The Holy Qur’an was descending upon him. And it is he who knows (its true) significance. And whatever he did, we also did that. He pronounced the Oneness of ALLAH [S.W.T] (saying): “Labbaik, O ALLAH, Labbaik, Labbaik. THOU hast no partner, Praise and Grace is THINE and the Sovereignty too; THOU hast no partner.” And the people also pronounced this Talbiya which they pronounce (today). The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] did not reject anything out of it. But the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] adhered to his own Talbiya. Jabir (R.A) said: We did not have any other intention but that of Hajj only, being unaware of the Umra (at that season), but when we came with him to the House, he touched the pillar and (made seven circuits) running three of them and walking four. And then going to the Station of Ibrahim (P.B.U.H), he recited: “And adopt the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.” And this Station was between him and the House. My father said (and I do not know whether he had made a mention of it but that was from ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Apostle [S.A.W.S] that he recited in two rak’ahs: “Say: HE is ALLAH One,” and Say: “Say: O unbelievers.” He then returned to the pillar (Hajar Aswad) and kissed it. He then went out of the gate to al-Safa’ and as he reached near it he recited: “Al-Safa’ and al-Marwa are among the signs appointed by ALLAH,” (adding:) I begin with what ALLAH [S.W.T] (has commanded me) to begin. He first mounted al-Safa’ till he saw the House, and facing Qibla he declared the Oneness of ALLAH [S.W.T] and Glorified HIM, and said: “There is no god but ALLAH, ONE, there is no partner with HIM. HIS is the Sovereignty, to HIM Praise is due, and HE is Powerful over everything. There is no god but ALLAH Alone, WHO fulfilled HIS promise, helped HIS servant and routed the confederates alone.” He then made supplication in the course of that saying such words three times. He then descended and walked towards al-Marwa, and when his feet came down in the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when he began to ascend he walked till he reached al-Marwa. There he did as he had done at al-Safa’. And when it was his last running at al-Marwa he said: If I had known beforehand what I have come to know afterwards, I would not have brought sacrificial animals and would have performed an ‘Umra. So, he who among you has not the sacrificial animals with him should put off Ihram and treat it as an Umra. Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju’sham (R.A) got up and said: Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S], does it apply to the present year, or does it apply forever? Thereupon the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] intertwined the fingers (of one hand) into another and said twice: The ‘Umra has become incorporated in the Hajj (adding): “No, but for ever and ever.” ‘Ali (R.A) came from the Yemen with the sacrificial animals for the Prophet [S.A.W.S] and found Fatima (R.A) to be one among those who had put off Ihram and had put on dyed clothes and had applied antimony. He (Hadrat ‘Ali (R.A)) showed disapproval to it, whereupon she said: My father has commanded me to do this. He (the narrator) said: That ‘Ali (R.A) used to say in Iraq: I went to the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] showing annoyance at Fatima (R.A) for what she had done, and asked the (verdict) of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] regarding what she had narrated from him, and told him that I was angry with her, whereupon he said: She has told the truth, she has told the truth. (The Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S] then asked ‘Ali (R.A)): What did you say when you undertook to go for Hajj? I (‘Ali (R.A)) said: O ALLAH, I am putting on Ihram for the same purpose as THY Messenger [S.A.W.S] has put it on. He said: I have with me sacrificial animals, so do not put off the Ihram. He (Jabir (R.A)) said: The total number of those sacrificial animals brought by ‘Ali (R.A) from the Yemen and of those brought by the Apostle of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] was one hundred. Then all the people except the Apostle of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] and those who had with them sacrificial animals, put off Ihram, and got their hair clipped; when it was the day of Tarwiya (8th of Dhu’l-Hijja) they went to Mina and put on the Ihram for Hajj and the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] rode and led the noon, afternoon, sunset ‘Isha’ and dawn prayers. He then waited a little till the sun rose, and commanded that a tent of hair should be pitched at Namira. The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] then set out and the Quraish did not doubt that he would halt at al-Mash’ar al-Haram (the sacred site) as the Quraish used to do in the pre-Islamic period. The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S], however, passed on till he came to ‘Arafa and he found that the tent had been pitched for him at Namira. There he got down till the sun had passed the meridian; he commanded that al-Qaswa should be brought and saddled for him. Then he came to the bottom of the valley, and addressed the people saying: Verily your blood, your property are as Sacred and inviolable as the Sacredness of this Day of yours, in this Month of yours, in this Town of yours. Behold! Everything pertaining to the Days of Ignorance is under my feet completely abolished. Abolished are also the blood-revenges of the Days of Ignorance. The first claim of ours on blood revenge which I abolish is that of the son of Rabi’a b. al-Harith, who was nursed among the tribe of Sa’d and killed by Hudhail. And the usury of pre-Islamic period is abolished, and the first of our usury I abolish is that of ‘Abbas b. ‘Abd al-Muttalib (R.A), for it is all abolished. Fear ALLAH [S.W.T] concerning women! Verily you have taken them on the security of ALLAH [S.W.T], and intercourse with them has been made lawful unto you by words of ALLAH [S.W.T]. You too have right over them, and that they should not allow anyone to sit on your bed whom you do not like. But if they do that, you can chastise them but not severely. Their rights upon you are that you should provide them with food and clothing in a fitting manner. I have left among you the Book of ALLAH [S.W.T], and if you hold fast to it, you would never go astray. And you would be asked about me (on the Day of Resurrection), (now tell me) what would you say? They (the audience) said: We will bear witness that you have Conveyed (the Message), discharged (the ministry of Prophethood) and given wise (sincere) counsel. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S]) then raised his forefinger towards the sky and pointing it at the people (said): “O ALLAH, be witness. O ALLAH, be witness,” saying it thrice. (Bilal (R.A) then) pronounced Adhan and later on Iqama and he (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S]) led the noon prayer. He (Bilal (R.A)) then uttered Iqama and he (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S]) led the afternoon prayer and he observed no other prayer in between the two. The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] then mounted his camel and came to the place of stay, making his she-camel al-Qaswa, turn towards the side where there we are rocks, having the path taken by those who went on foot in front of him, and faced the Qibla. He kept standing there till the sun set, and the yellow light had somewhat gone, and the disc of the sun had disappeared. He made Usama (R.A) sit behind him, and he pulled the nose-string of Qaswa so forcefully that its head touched the saddle (in order to keep her under perfect control), and he pointed out to the people with his right hand to be moderate (in speed), and whenever he happened to pass over an elevated tract of sand, he slightly loosened it (the nose-string of his camel) till she climbed up and this is how he reached al-Muzdalifa. There he led the evening and ‘Isha prayers with one Adhan and two Iqamas and did not glorify (ALLAH) in between them (i.e. he did not observe supererogatory rak’ahs between Maghrib and ‘Isha’ prayers). The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] then lay down till dawn and offered the dawn prayer with an Adhan and Iqama when the morning light was clear. He again mounted al-Qaswa, and when he came to al-Mash’ar al-Haram, he faced towards Qibla, supplicated HIM, Glorified HIM, and pronounced HIS Uniqueness (La ilaha illa ALLAH) and Oneness, and kept standing till the daylight was very clear. He then went quickly before the sun rose, and seated behind him was al-Fadl b. ‘Abbas (R.A) and he was a man having beautiful hair and fair complexion and handsome face. As the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] was moving on, there was also going a group of women (side by side with them). Al-Fadl (R.A) began to look at them. The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] placed his hand on the face of Fadl (R.A) who then turned his face to the other side, and began to see, and the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] turned his hand to the other side and placed it on the face of al-Fadl (R.A). He again turned his face to the other side till he came to the bottom of Muhassir. He urged her (al-Qaswa) a little, and, following the middle road, which comes out at the greatest jamra, he came to the jamral which is near the tree. At this he threw seven small pebbles, saying ALLAH-o-Akbar while throwing every one of them in a manner in which the small pebbles are thrown (with the help of fingers) and this he did in the bottom of the valley. He then went to the place of sacrifice, and sacrificed sixty-three (camels) with his own hand. Then he gave the remaining number to ‘Ali (R.A) who sacrificed them, and he shared him in his sacrifice. He then commanded that a piece of flesh from each animal sacrificed should be put in a pot, and when it was cooked, both of them (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S] and Hadrat ‘Ali (R.A)) took some meat out of it and drank its soup. The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] again rode and came to the House, and offered the Zuhr prayer at Mecca. He came to the tribe of Abd al-Muttalib, who were supplying water at Zamzam, and said: Draw water. O Bani ‘Abd al-Muttalib; were it not that people would usurp this right of supplying water from you, I would have drawn it along with you. So they handed him a basket and he drank from it.

Sahih Muslim: Chapter 17, Book 7: Pilgrimage (Kitab Al-Hajj), Book 7, Number 2805:

Jabir (R.A) reported:

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] as saying: I have sacrificed (the animals) here, and the whole of Mina is a place for sacrifice; so sacrifice your animals at your places. I have stayed here (near these rocks), and the whole of Arafat is a place for stay. And I have stayed here (at Muzdalifa near Mash’ar al-Haram and the whole of Muzdalifa) is a place for stay (i.e. one is permitted to spend night in any part of it, as one likes).

Sahih Muslim: Chapter 17, Book 7: Pilgrimage (Kitab Al-Hajj), Book 7, Number 2806:

Jabir b. Abdullah (R.A) reported:

That when ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] proceeded to Mecca, he came to it (the Black Stone) he kissed it and moved to his right and moved quickly in three circuits, and walked in four circuits.

Sahih Muslim: Chapter 21, Book 7: Pilgrimage, Number 2832:

Abdullah b. ‘Umar (R.A) reported:

ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] observed Tamattu’ in Hajjat-ul-Wada’. He first put on Ihram for ‘Umra and then for Hajj and then offered animal sacrifice. So he drove the sacrificial animals with him from Dhu’l-Hulaifa. ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] commenced Ihram of Umra and thus pronounced Talbiya for ‘Umra and then (put on Ihram for Hajj) and pronounced Talbiya for Hajj. And the people performed Tamattu’ in the company of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S]. They put on Ihram for Umra (first) and then for Hajj. Some of them had sacrificial animals which they had brought with them, whereas some of them had none to sacrifice. So when ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] came to Mecca, he said to the people: He who amongst you has brought sacrificial animals along with him must not treat as lawful anything which has become unlawful for him till he has completed the Hajj; and he, who amongst you has not brought the sacrificial animals should circumambulate the House, and run between al-Safa’ and al-Marwa and clip (his hair) and put off the Ihram, and then again put on the Ihram for Hajj and offer sacrifice of animals. But he who does not find the sacrificial animal, he should observe fast for three days during the Hajj and for seven days when he returns to his family. ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] circumambulated (the House) when he came to Mecca: he first kissed the corner (of the Ka’ba containing the Black Stone), then ran in three circuits out of seven and walked in four circuits. And then when he had finished the circumambulation of the House he observed two rak’ahs of prayer at the Station (of Ibrahim (P.B.U.H)), and then pronounced Salaam (for concluding the rak’ahs), and departed and came to al-Safa’ and ran seven times between al-Safa’ and al-Marwa. After that he did not treat anything as lawful which had become unlawful till he had completed his Hajj and sacrificed his animal on the day of sacrifice (10th of Dhu’l-Hijja). and then went back quickly (to Mecca) and performed circumambulation of the House (known as tawaf ifada) after which all that was unlawful for him became lawful; and those who had brought the sacrificial animals along with them did as ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] had done. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of ‘A’isha (R.A). The wife of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S], concerning his Tamattu’ of Hajj and ‘Umra and performing of Tamattu’ by people in his company.
